Hi

If you build an outboard converter from scratch, the old “data to cassette tape” duty 
cycle modulation is a  good candidate. It was dirt cheap to demodulate or generate
back “a while ago”. It’s still a very cheap thing to do today.

You still would need all the loop supples and other stuff that goes along with 
driving the TTY.
