Just the chip alone is $2.18 from Mouser. ($4.36 for two)
Add a pair of connectors at $1.99 apiece....
This is exactly what I did for my loop converter. I used the RS-232 to
TTL "function block" as the basis, then added the required buffering,
logic correction, opto-isolation and such to it along with a built in
power supply.
