There was also a splicer made by Teletype for the 5-level FAA ADIS system.
It looked like an enlargement of a magnetic tape splicer, if you ever saw
one of those things. Overlap two pieces of tape between guides, clamps
to hold them down, a knife that cuts a diagonal through the two layers,
throw away the top loose end, and apply a heat-activated patch across the
diagonal slice, then trim the sides of the patched tape to correct width.
This was intended for use on blank tape going into the reperforator-
transmitter stands, so it never ran out of tape. I don't know how well
this worked in practice. You'd have to know the tape was running low,
reel out enough tape onto the floor to give you time to make the splice,
then put the new roll on the supply reel. And then tear off the tape
coming out of the reader so you could discard the used tape and start
reeling up the freshly-punched tape.
Magnetic drums and then disks put an end to all that.
