I remember electronic counters made with Dekatrons.  Not very fast,
which is the nature of gas-filled tubes.  The late W6NRM built one
himself for adjusting RTTY filters and such.  But mostly I remember
physicists cursing them.

Burroughs had a decimal counting tube that used a hard vacuum, and
used a cylindrical magnet to impose a preferred direction on
movement of the electron beam from one electrode to the next.
But you couldn't read it by looking at it.
