Ack! Sounds about right for craigslist.. but at least he's being up-front
with us!
Couple months ago I posted an an on minneapolis.craigslist.org looking for
a teletype, any model, any age, any condition - but preferring an ASR 33. I
got one bite from an older gent who lives around 25 miles away. At first,
he threw out $500 - for a complete, original and serviced ASR 33 in full
working order.
It was more than I'd wanted to spend, but I figured I might just go for it,
if the machine was nice. Hey - I don't have much spare cash, eh?
But once I showed interest in it, the gears started spinning, the bells
started ringing and things changed quickly. Suddenly, he no longer wanted
to sell it individually at all, but as part of some larger collection of
items to which he ascribed some historic significance (and naturally, a
strongly "enhanced value").
Next thing I knew, he was "almost considering letting it go" for $1100 or
so.. We've had a couple of (cordial, friendly) mails since that time, but
there's no way I'd even consider buying it at $1100 - just on principle. I
don't appreciate the bait & switch tactic BS - nor should any of you.
I expected so much more of a gent of his many long years..
But then, a fellow Greenkeys list member popped up with a "FTGH" Model 15,
and it's now in the hands of a good friend, waiting until September when it
will arrive at its new home in St. Paul. Man, is it just me, or are some
folks just so much easier to love than others?? =)
