Thanks everyone!
Don - I was one of those kids (not in Illinois, though). Much
key-pounding, and hitting the "break" key, and so on. Taught me to type at
a very steady speed...
I have a set of the Teletype manuals, and have read most of them in the
right sequence, but darned if I can get things to tick over and print local
properly after lifting off the typing set for cleaning. I've been cautious
about working on them, for exactly that reason; both have had a decent
clean with very limited disassembly (except for that time I made the
mistake of removing a keyboard cover) and lubrication to order. Now I've
learned a lot in the process, but am belatedly realizing I may have bitten
off more than my patience will handle.
I will look our for Wayne - that seems like a good option. Most of Vermont
is drivable distance from here.
