There are a ton on ebay. Here are a few and a search to find more.

Subject: [GreenKeys] Wanted - An optical 8-level paper tape reader assembly

There used to be simple optical reader bars for 8-level paper tape consisting of a row of 9 photo-transistors in a squared-O clip frame. It was typically illuminated by a long bar 12v automobile dome lamp bulb.

I need some of those, for a project.
Are those reader bars still available anywhere?
If so, can someone give me a link to one?

They were a common item during the 1980's.
It allowed a very simple micro to read punched paper tape simply by yanking it through the assembly.

Interfacing them was easy - two chips (an 8-bit latch, and a flip-flop) and a trigger debounce circuit. The smaller sprocket hole photo-transistor triggers the latch to grab the data, and raises an interrupt flip-flop. The micro clears the interrupt flop once it read the byte.

I could probably design and fab a frame for a row of opto-interrupters to do this job, but for precision and speed I'd rather just buy a pre-made assembly IF that's still possible.
(I still have to make the interface...)

Are those optical reader bars still available anywhere? If so, where?

Thanks!
- Keith Mc.
