Anyone know anything about the TT-36 and/or AN/GGA-1?? The AWA Museum
just received a donation of a TT-36/GGA-1 (pictures enclosed) .
I have found very little about it on the Internet (mostly on
Navy-radio.com). The AN/GGA-1 is described as a "Teletypewriter Group"
and consists of the TT-36 tape reader and TT-37 & -38 reperforators
(don't know what the difference is between the TT-37 & TT-38, except
that the TT-38 weighs twice as much as the TT-37). Some descriptions say
it is used with "classified equipment" others (AN/TSC-35 manual) call it
cryptographic equipment.
The TT-36 has 24 cam-operated switches and 8 multi-pole relays. It
looks like it could encrypt a signal by itsself, but there is no obvious
way to change the "key" other than the "Group Eliminator" switch on the
front. There are two toggle switches under the cover, but the only
identification for them is "484" above the upper one. It does not look
like it would be easy to change the cams. There are two large
connectors on the back, so maybe encryption was done in a different unit.
The TT-36 has a tag labeled "Teletype Code ZA0U2HG" and a US Patents
tag for patents # 2074189 & 2326148 (these patents have to do with
stopping a tape that has broken and reading chadless tape)
JANAP 161 says that the AN/GGA-1 operates at 460 opm (75 wpm?), so maybe
this unit was designed to interoperate with some European TTY crypto gear??
Any ideas??
