I did a google search on fragments of the text and it came up  with
this:

That is,  Popular Mechanics, September 1950, page 239.

Sounds like parity for  error detection with some kind of
ENQ-ACK flow control with NAK used to  request retransmission?
Hard to tell from this kind of ad, but definitely  some kind
of error correction protocol.

The resolution of Google's  scan of the ad is about twice
than the resolution of the scan quoted from  E-bay.
