Thank you Shipmate!
I spent the day remembering my squadron mates that never grow old like me.
When I was still working at Illinois Bell in Chicago we held a ceremony on
every Memorial Day and Veterans Day at the flag pole on the corner of
Randolph and Franklin Streets. The ceremony would include shooting blanks
from 1903 Springfield Rifles... the playing of TAPS and a talk by a
Veteran.
One Air Force Veteran who spoke was a recipient of the CMoH.
As time went on and many of the members of our Legion post retired and left
the area, the company stopped support of the Post and we had to fold after
continuous operation from 1919. Not only was this sad, but the company
trashed the post charter signed by all of the WWI Veterans that started
the post.
The last ceremony we held was all but ignored by pedestrians who walked
right through our ranks as if we were not there. I was also present when
the
American Legion cast aluminum crest was removed from the base of the flag
poles.
Ignorance is alive and doing very well in this country.

Today I went to the grocery store and there were a couple of
older veterans outside handing out poppies for donations. One
of them noticed my ham license plate and related that he had been
a Navy radioman during the Korean war. As we chatted people
would come up and ask about the poppies, lousy education system,
and he would patiently explain the meaning. It saddened me to
know how many people were ignorant of the poppie story. So
with Memorial Day coming up how about sending out the story of
the poppies and maybe the poem "In Flanders Fields" by John McCrae.
I'm really tired of the day turning into sales, car races and picnics.
We don't even have parades to help remember the meaning anymore.
Please remember the vets and those that never returned on Memorial Day.
