Roy,
I think the 12 pound weight was for the civilian version, without much
of a case. Western Union was looking for a smaller, lower cost unit
to use instead of the M28. In the July 1957 WUTR, the WU president is
quoted as saying "You will be particularly interested in knowing that
Western Union, in addition to working closely with the Teleprinter
Corporation's people in testing and pre-production engineering of the
equipment, has an option to buy a substantial part of the stock of
this new company."
But for some reason the deal with WU fell through and Teleprinter
decided to sell to the military.
Most of the ARTS article & pictures came from WUTR, April, 1958 and
was a reprint of a paper Bernard Howard gave at an IEE meeting in Feb
1958. The fact that this information appeared in the March/April '58
issue of ARTS Bulletin shows a very short leadtime. Also, there is at
least one picture that is not in the WUTR and they seem to be of a
better quality in the the ARTS Bulletin. Maybe W2EBZ worked for
Teleprinter Corp? (his QTH in 1954 &1960 is listed as New York City)
have fun,
Duncan
