If you want other "content" to display you could look at "HeavyMetal" also.

It also wants to talk to a serial interface, but there are circuits available
online to for instance use a RS232 signal line to key a TTY loop, and vice
versa. Alternately you might use a TU or build a simple circuit to take the
RS232 signal and turn it into FSK tones.
