GA OMs;

Well, here's the story.

Since these machines are "split" (sending / keyboard and receiving /
typing unit),
I decided to debug the keyboard side since there is less to it.

I ran the one side of the keyboard thru a 9-v battery, a 1K resistor
(to limit the current), and back to other side of the keyboard.

I then threw an oscilloscope onto the resistor and watched what happened
when I typed: The signal was a little scratchy - so I cleaned the keyboard
contacts with alcohol. Tried again: much better, however the duty-cycle
between MARK and SPACE was skewed. I adjusted the timing on the little
box for 50% duty cycle. Looks good.

Now, the typing unit was typing only a few characters - most of them wrong.
I took the typing unit off and oiled the heck out of it. Wiped it down
and put it back on the base. Then I cycled it with "U" "*" RUBOUT and
CTRL-SHIFT-@ (NULL/BLANK).

Noticed on the right hand side ("magnet land" as I like to call it)
that some of the selectors were not moving. Pulled on them with a
spring puller and found that they were gummed-up. Put some alcohol on
them and rocked them back-and-forth until they were free. Re-oiled them.
Test machine: working MUCH, MUCH better. Needs a good burning-in to shake
it down, which I will do when I get a 20ma to RS-232 EIA box.

One thing that is strange is the signal on the magnets: I've never
seen anything like it in my life: there is a 120-Hz signal riding
on the magnets. Things seems to be working so I'm going to leave it
alone.
