On the one hand, of course I agree that an efficient marketplace is a
good thing. People know what an item is worth, and can get the best
price for it. Everything is a commodity.
But on the other hand, you can't expect us not to be unhappy about
watching a hobby get priced out of our reach. I went through the same
thing with vintage computer collecting. I was never in it for the
money, all I ever wanted were toys to play and tinker with. For a long
time, vintage computers were practically free -- or maybe you had to
pay scrap value in a pinch. So I had unlimited toys to play with, and
because there was no market demand everybody who wanted to play with
those toys had a chance. If you wanted to trade with another
collector, no problem. People gave each other things for free, because
honestly they didn't have any value outside of our little community.
Now, of course, the vintage computer marketplace is through the roof.
It's just a reality, and I can accept it even if I'm not all that
happy about it. Such is life.
I think it'll be too bad if it happens to the Teletype world. I'm just
lucky I managed to get a 33 for cheap when I did! I'm no more
interested in Teletypes for the money than I am computers. I enjoy
using mine, that's all I want out of it.
