Ouch. Terrible timing. Your email made my stomach crawl. 

The odd thing is that the same would probably happen if you turned on the television, maybe with a worse report or more graphic. But on the other hand, her attention span was so focused on the teletype with excitement and expectation that those words were the worst one that could come up.  I'm sorry this happened, Eugene.

Try autostart. Have her type a message in, and then watch it some out a bit later. Magic. 

Maybe we have Tom run a kid friendly overstrike picture for her.

As for how to explain our world to an 11 year old.... I'm not sure.
