GA OMs;
Hummm - 7 managers in 23 years: that's roughly 3 yrs/mgr.
When I started with a computer company back in the 70's, we chip-shot
the boards. Even though the TTL 7400-series chips were cheap, we'd
still feel bad if we replaced the wrong one.
Later, the company decided that it was cheaper to hire "swap monkeys"
who threw BOARDS at the computer instead of chip-shooting. They called
it FRU LEVEL TROUBLESHOOTING.(pronounced "frew") or Field Replaceable
Units.
If you've read one of my previous postings, you saw where the company
started to make everyone a manager who aspired to be a manager, and put
them where ever they needed a manager - whether the guy knew anything
about the job/people he was managing or not. A LOT of those people
couldn't do the job (WHY? - because they didn't know anything ABOUT
the job!) and they'd fire them, and replace them with another one.
We called that "FRU LEVEL MANAGEMENT" (and, like the swap monkeys
did their troubleshooting by swapping parts 'til it worked) they
swapped-out managers until they found one that worked.
