In the suburban district around Chicago there were Women employees but
to my knowledge none of them
were in field communications service for Teletype and Data. About 35
to 40 percent of the people in our
Data Service Center were women. I went into engineering in 1976 as a
special service circuit designer.
I talked over the phone with many women who were coordinators and
technical clerks, but all the technicians
that called me were men. I trained most of the incoming designers
some of them were women but except
for a few would move on to something different. Some of the techs
would get frustrated with the female
designers and ask "Let me speak to the Doctor"

As a 32 year veteran of the elevator business, I would always
tell those calling me for a "progress" report that they had just set
me back two hours, and if they called me again, it
could easily be tomorrow before it was repaired. Saying that to
a mangement type at AT&T was probably not survivable.

That brings up a question- were there any women working as
Teletype repair people?
