Me and my Dad went over to one of his fellow co-worker's
house for dinner. His fellow co-worker was an amateur
radio operator. I had no idea what that meant. After
dinner he took us out to the garage, pulled out a home-brew
regenerative shortwave receiver, connected a piece of "random wire"
to it, and fired it up.

There are no words in the English language to explain how
mesmerized I was!
