Hi Lester -
Coincidentally, I’m reading Rise and Fall of COMSAT by Dave Whelan, and just finished the Telstar chapters. The book was dropped off to me by another COMSAT retiree.
How cool you have a piece of the Horn - wish we could have snatched a piece of the Labs Torus when it went down. Too bad not very many of the old antennas have been saved. See my http://www.jamesburgdish.org website for an example of what’s happened to some of them.

Greetings All:
My book, The Rise and Fall of COMSAT, was just published by Palgrave-Macmillan. The price is outrageous: $115. It is available on Amazon for $98. The promo code below only works on the Palgrave.com website-still $80.50. They seem to be targeting a "captive" market: research libraries.
I think I get a few dollars for each copy-which I would gladly donate to COMARA. Although there is an exception for "discounted sales." The "Origins" book netted me just about $1000 for about 4000 hours of work. Don't you love academia? Could I get hired as an engineer at my advanced age?
I will see some of you at AIAA Space 2014 in San Diego
Best to all
Dave

Satellites were my life work, secondary, of course, to ham radio HI. I have sections of the honeycomb aluminum structure that formed the reflector surface of the Telstar antenna at Andover (a Hogg Horn). Comsat did not want to pay taxes on it, to the earth station that communicated with Telstar I was town down for scrap. The identical station in France is intact, and part of a museum. In fact they use the reflector surface as a movie screen in the exhibit.
I am not the only Greenkeyer who started with Comsat Labs/Comsat General.

It Is TELSTAR DAY!!!!!
July 10, 1962. This date marks the launch of Telstar 1, the first communications satellite capable of relaying television signals from Europe to North America!
Yes on this VERY day long ago our childhood TELSTAR I was launched.... and so was my fascination with Sat Com-
For those of you Non-space science folk this is sure to be a memory though ... and a great song by Joe Meek of UK but a hit indeed for the VENTURES (60s music buddies can add to this )
John R. Pierce of Bell Labs fame was the father of TELSTAR, and later in my life to become a great friend and of mine and a friend to the SMECC museum project. In addition A.C. Dickieson, the project manager for TELSTAR, ended up retiring in Sun City here and I got to know him as well. Add to that James Early who did device development for the Telstar Project another great mind and a great friend...Unfortunately all have passed on many years ago.....add to that Eugene O'Neill and other... and look below in comments and you will see some other articles about TELSTAR by some people I was happy to call my friends... I miss them all but thankful to have had the time I did with them. ok lets listen to the TELSTAR song by the Ventures....
Enjoy the walk down memory lane.... Ed Sharpe archivist for SMECC
