Don't know about WW2 but for years the deaf folks used all sorts of 
14's,15's,19's and such to communicate. I guess you could call that a early 
form of email ? :)

I got started on teletypes because a deaf person asked me to fix his 15. Got 
it fixed and got me hooked on them!
