I posted to the reflector last week and wanted to thank the list members who responded and offered words of encouragement on my quest to recapture some of my formative years by obtaining another ASR-33 teletype. I got quite a few responses and lots of good information on how to obtain parts and who still services these animals. No leads on any 33's - until today that is.
As I previously posted, when I was a teenager, a ham radio friend of my dad's who worked for the phone company gave me three teletypes an ASR-32 and two ASR-33's. One 33 was set up as a terminal and the other was a TWX machine that still had the touch-tone pad on the right side and the pedestal was full of electronics. I used the Terminal unit with the a 6802-based single-board computer and then built a RTTY and CW station around them. They were both in very good to excellent condition. I joined the Air Force out of college and...moving the machines started to get to be too much...I left the ASR-32 in MA and not sure what happened to that, but the 33's made it with me out to WPAFB and I left them in OH when I moved to San Antonio TX - 20 years ago in 1994.
Well, on a hunch, I decided to track down the guy I gave them to (remember in 1994, you either gave away these things or paid someone to haul them away but you didn't "pay" for an old Teletype). He retired and moved to FL but today I finally got a hold of him and sure enough he still has the machines in the same warehouse that I left them- he said "Dave, I was planning on cleaning that place out this summer!" Almost twenty years to the day and if I waited just a few more months they would have taken their final trip to a landfil. Wow - how lucky is that!?!
The next step is to get them completely refurbished/restored and then they can take their rightful place at home and never have to worry about a landfill - at least not on my watch. I can almost smell the hot oil boiling out from under the hood as the little type wheel clacks out RYRYRYRYRY.
Thanks again everyone, this is a great list!
