The  50 pin version were  common for 1A2  key   telephone  systems!
I  Think the phone company was a huge consumer of those  connectors!

OK,  that CCU looks like one for Telex. The one with two  "Centronics"
connectors is for TWX and 99 of the 100 wires are used. The  real name
of the connectors is Amphenol Micro-ribbon, but they get  called
Centronics because they are most familiar when used with that make  of
printers for computers.

There is some information about the  Telex equipment in Western Union
Technical Review. In particular see the  article in Vol. 17, No. 4,
starting on page 134.
