That front door does not allow access to the type pallets or paper jams.
That's
what the top lid is for. As far as I can tell, it might be for lubrication
of the
codebars and bails without removing the entire cover. Probably
a good option if the machines run 24/7.

These machines ran 24/7/365

The hinged door was an option to allow a seasoned operator to clean the type
pallets  and clear paper jams without lifting the heavy cover.

Similar options were on the Model 14 Strip Printers...
