Just some random thoughts....
I'm sure if I'm wrong, someone will be kind enough to
correct me.

Having had the joy of acquiring a complete two bay rack
full of AN/FCC-3 gear in the early '70s, of course I wanted
to put it to use.

Well, good luck with that, bastard frequencies and shifts.

However, it did teach me what the Technical Material Corp.
was thinking with the independent Side Band equipment.

3/4 of the power in an AM broadcast is wasted, compared
to the actual power in a single sideband. Double sideband
is still 50% of AM though.

Now, add in frequency multiplexed independent side band
operation and viola, LOTS of channels taking up a single voice
grade link on HF.

At least 14 channels running at 60 WPM, the equivalent of
840 WPM. Much more efficient utilization of bandwidth.

And we ALL know that any government, or it's military runs
off of it's internally generated paperwork. ;-)
