I’m reminded of the saying:

"Ignorant is curable.

Stupid is permanent."

I think there is a kind of carried over ignorance. The
mis-use of words or phrases is often because the person
doing it has heard or seen the same error many times and
just assumes its correct. In casual communication its often
not very important but in journalism its inexcusable. I
have, of course, my own favorite bug-a-boos (carrot and
stick is one, it does NOT mean reward and punishment) but
they are pervasive and tend to be very persistent.
The worst substitute teacher I ever had was in grammar
school. Her name was Mrs.Clock. When she didn't like a kid
she would grab his hair and bank his head on the desk. These
days she would be in prison but this was sixty-five years
ago so no one thought anything of it.
FWIW: A storage place I have was burgled over the week
end. Not much taken but a couple of cameras of some
sentimental value if nothing more. The burglar cut the lock
off. I strongly suggest using deluxe padlocks of the type
that shield the link. A determined thief could still get it
off but it would take too long for a casual one. This
"person" broke into perhaps seven or eight storage spaces.
