One of my gripes is "material" vs. "materiel"; one is what a human wears, 
whilst the other can really hurt you (much like ordnance, I suppose).  

Even the mainstream media gets that wrong (stupid journos, never taught 
how to spell, robotically accepting a spell-checker).

On another mailing list, far away, I'm currently arguing that 
"stenography" is not the same as "steganography".  Sigh.
