I was in the Army Security Agency, stationed in Northern Japan 50 years 
ago.  BTW, I still have one of the original geiger counters and pen type 
radiation dosimeters along with the dosimeter charger that was issued to 
the Civil Defense people back then.  They still work too, and I keep 'em 
in shape just in case - LOL.
