I was a 5th grade student living in a farmhouse just outside Geneva
Switzerland. In the same year, we had the Cuban Missile Crisis and
the French Algeria Crisis. Between the two, it seemed that the world
was coming to an end. The Algeria crisis meant that the French border
just 2 kilometers from our place was armed to the teeth with cars
backed up forever as they inspected each car for bombs (normally,
that is very close to being an open border). And the Cuban Missile
Crisis led to sell-outs of non-perishable foods in the supermarkets.
The shelves were swept clean of rice, flour and just about anything
else you might want in your fallout shelter. That was the year I started
reading newspapers. Thank goodness for Art Buchwald's column.
