[GreenKeys] Teletype 33 base question

Way back when, I had a model 33 KSR with a base very similar to this. But
rather than being a plain welded box, the 'front' panel of the base had a
push-button latch near the top, which opened to reveal a (storage?)
compartment inside of the hollow base.

Every base I've seen, since that time, is just as shown in the photo. No
hinged panel.

What's the story on this? Was my base with compartment some sort of option?
