Essentially, a derivation of the no-carbon-required paper stock.

Now the Extel machines sometimes used ribbons and sometimes printed on special paper made by 3M that turned black when struck.  I assume that was a lot more expensive than plain paper, so I don't know why anyone would choose that kind of paper unless the printing volume was small.

It was described to me that it was like microscopic white eggs containing black ink that were on the surface of the paper, so that impact broke the eggs and released the black ink.  So far as I have been able to learn the special paper is no longer available, so an Extel printer without the ribbon feature is practically useless today.
