It provides regulated DC for the punch and auxiliary loops, and
optionally also provides step-up/down from varying line voltages
by means of different winding taps, and has iirc a tap for 25 Hz
power as well, and enough iron in the core to presumably not
saturate when running at 25Hz. I have one that actually works,
but I don't use it - don't need the step up/down and have
substituted a small modern switching supply as the punch power
supply. It's fun to start it up occasionally when you want to
give a nice light show, though:
