Are the acetone and ATF supposed to mix and stay mixed? I found that my mixture separated over time so that it seemed like it wouldn't work as well if you had to soak things for a long time.

I have not tried the ATF/acetone mix, but when I was working we used Kroil by the case. It works very well for rusted bolts, especially if given overnight to soak.
I will try to keep the ATF/acetone mix in mind when I run out of Kroil.

Speaking of do it yourself mixtures, the absolute BEST mixture
for freeing frozen screws nuts, shafts etc. is a 50/50 mixture of
automatic transmission fluid and acetone. The next best product,
commercially available, is Kroil.
