Jim,

Wasn't the entire machine, but the typing unit of the M-15, when I worked for The AP in Raleigh, 1978 timeframe.

We'd pull the typing unit off the base, pull off the platen, pull the typing basket off and take off the carriage return belt and pull the main shaft,

The basket and typing unit were dunked in a bucket of kerosene and then hosed down with hot water, and immediately dunked in a bucket of oil.    

The mainshaft was taken apart and checked for wear and any worn parts were replaced - new felts, of course.  Then the machine was put back together.

One guy who ran a Teletype repair business a few years back said he
soaks the whole machine in a tub of kerosene.
