Hey Paul - both, really:
When I would punch tape on the 28-ASR during a QSO, the "beginning"
of the tape would be in the TD. Then I'd run it and let the tape
winder collect it - because it was going to be thrown out when the
QSO was done.
Also, there was a technique used with shorter tapes, where you
would wind it on your left hand in a figure-8 pattern, and then
you would place that on the floor, the tape would come out of
the figure-8 without a twist.
