Greetings List,
The post about the smell of the original oil caught my attention. I am working towards restoring my TTYs so I can relive my childhood to some degree and the distinct smell of the oil boiling away inside the machine is critical to my needs at least. It was especially wonderful when you lifted the hood on the ASR-33 after running a while and you got a blast of it in the face.
So I Googled the oil part number and tracked it down to American Oil out of NJ. I sent an email to the president Chuck Decker who called me within about 5 minutes. After explaining the importance of obtaining some more oil for the teletype community, he told me he has a guy who has worked there for 40 years and said he had the original formulation and would check to see if they had enough raw materials (or could obtain them in less than 20,000 Gal. quantities) to mix up a batch. I should know by Monday of next week.
In case anyone else is interested, here is his email address: Chuck Decker [chuck at americanoil1895.com]...might not hurt if several of us sent him an email so he could gauge the size of our market. I am hoping we can convince him to proceed.
If necessary, I will purchase whatever he can produce then parcel it out to the Greenkeys in small quantities as needed. If there is enough interest, he might be able to make up smaller bottles to meet our needs.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
