It's a physically contacting system, but rather interesting. Star-
shaped 'feelers' ride on independent arms in the head- when there's a
hole present, a leg of the star drops through, when there's not, the
star rides up and the contact opens. This way they can read a hole
with the tape moving forward or back. These stars spin about an axis
and I assume they fall into line pretty quick with a few nulls punched
in the header.
