Woohoo! Wayne, this was exactly the problem. They were sticking together.

I gave it a little bit of oil and a little bit of manual wiggling, and gradually I started getting the correct characters. It's still just a little bit gummed up and not always giving the right character (maybe 90% correct?), so tomorrow I'm going to go all the way and spray it with solvent and then re-lube.

But that was it! Thanks so much for walking me through that. The pictures were especially helpful.

The only thing I have left to do is adjust the line-feed linkage (it sure is finicky) and I think everything will be 100%, completely, totally working!
