I recently changed mine after I got my general ticket from KD8QGX to WW2TTY to be more in line with my love for WWII equipment. I have to append with 'slash 8' or I get the same thing.

Agreed. I recently changed from KD0DFR to W2TTY and now folks on the local repeaters in Denver ask me why I am visiting Colorado!

On my home machine I have a sig with call and one without it. The problem these days is that you can no longer identify the location of a call by the call area number.  While this allows people to move around and keep their call signs it does make it confusing on the air sometimes.
