The Bodine motor on that machine has a shaft out both ends.
The left end is driving the print mechanism, and the right end
with the pinion connected to nothing is where it should be for
a shortened Model 14 type keyboard camshaft. It looks like this
was built on a modified Model 14 keyboard base, but they keyboard
part wasn't finished.
This looks experimental. Notice the knurled thumbwheel on the
left end of the motor shaft, and the square section with a pin,
clearly intended for a crank, on the main camshaft. Those are
things one might put on a test item, but in production, they'd
be deleted.
