[GreenKeys] Not Your Average M14 - eBay

Thanks for the info, Jack.
Back when Atlantic Surplus Sales was around and advertising in CQ Magazine,
my boyhood friend K2YGL (still in the FCC database as W1GAB) and I trekked
from Long Island into Brooklyn, New York and bought two FRXD-3-EL machines.
I have no recollection of how we got them home. I think the year was 1961.
Tom was a bit of a genius (later graduated from MIT), and he figured out how
to wire the cam switches to read the tape coming out of the punching block.
I used to love punching tape off the air and then send the same data back to
the originating station. Of course, I had a collection of RYRY and CQ tapes,
storing them in aluminum 35-mm film cans. When perforating tape, I used to
catch the chads in a tin can strapped to the bottom of the operating desk; I
had cut a hole in the desk so they could fall through. Hee hee.
I miss that machine no end. -
Today I can send an ASCII file from an old Model 100 Radio Shack portable
CMOS computer to my Kantronics UTU, and thence into the local loop to drive
my Model 28 selector magnets. The "action" is a great source of fascination
to my 7-year old grandson! But the magic isn't the same for me as the
"climbing monkey" reperf back in the day, that's for sure.

Alex,
It's worth it just for the cover.
George, W7TTY, gave me a decent FRXD with cover
a few years ago. The reperf worked fine, but the wiring for the
TD was all hacked up. It's on my "...get around to it" list.
But, it has a place of honor in the Ham shack.
73,
Jack K0TTY

Years ago (early 1960s) I had an FRXD-3-EL non-typing "climbing monkey"
reperf in my shack.
How I loved that machine, and have never heard of one since, until this
e-mail thread appeared this morning.
Sad to say, I donated my FRXD to The Science Museum of Long Island, and it
discarded it, much to my dismay.
I would love to find another, but am hesitant about buying this typing FRXD
on eBay.
