Hi Jim:

Understand the concept of synchronous crypto transmissions. We had that
too during our time using the KW-26s which ran continuously whether or not
traffic was present. The only time there was a "break" in those
transmissions
was when the KW-26s had to be reset or rekeyed for the next 24 hour
"crypto period", or if they "jumped set" which they sometimes did (and
which
necessitated a "reset").

Listening to a KW-26 on RATT, it too sounded like just ordinary teletype
traffic, except that no one could copy anything but garble (KW-26s made
a real mess out of traffic for the Russians, LOL).

My understanding is that modern crypto equipment emits a continuous stream
of random-looking bits and they keep it up regardless of whether there
is traffic, so as to foil traffic analysis.

When the transmission starts at precisely 5PM it may be running in
parallel with transmission on another frequency used during the daytime,
so the receiver can switch frequencies without a break in traffic.
