I do wish that the "shorpy" site would actually identify and credit
the original sources for the photos.

In this case this is a photograph taken by Esther Bubley for
the US Office of War Information.  It's online as a part of the
US Library of Congress' Prints & Photographs division website
(which is a marvel!)  A current direct link to their page with
the photo (and versions at several resolutions) is:

A couple of years ago, I went through and collected everything
that I could find on the LoC PP site that was TTY-related, with proper
citations of call numbers.  The page for the Esther Bubley OWI
photos is:

This includes two other photos of the same switchboard from
slightly different angles, as well as other views of the Washington,
DC Western Union office.

Interestingly, though, it appears that the versions available on the
LoC PP site now are much higher resolution than the ones available
when I put this together in 2010 - so if you spot something of
interest, it would be best to check the current versions at the LoC.
