There is no differance in the ammount of power used for FM voice or rtty, unlike a ssb transmitter where there is about a 3 to 1 average differance between ssb voice and rtty.

As most ham rigs are designed to put out the rated power at 13.8 volts, you might try cutting the voltage to just over 12 volts if you can. This will drop the power back some.

Even at this it depends on the FM transceiver. You might want to put a small fan on it if it does not have one. Some 2 meter transceivers will take it and some won't . I would keep an eye on it and feel the heatsink from time to time.

Around here years ago about 20 of us were using some Clegg 220 transceivers and they would be keyed down for long times to send lots of pix.
Never did know of a failed one due to the long tx time.

I have a 2 meter Icom.. I think all it does is FM.

Probably would be good NOT to run it on full power if you were send a big picture file eh!?
I am not sure how well these units do in a long key down condition... Any Advice!?

I have now 12 TUs some I am sure are non-functional museum display items but some show life ...(time to start testing some...)

Larry... Gil.... want to experiment with this some!?
