Interesting.
In the navy from 76 - 82 the red stood for the crypto portion and the black
stood for the unsecured portion of the circuit.
Basically the 1203 was the black portion of the circuit and the 1210 was the
crypto portion

two separate numbers

In U.S. military and Bell System practice the plug with the red shell is the
printer, and the one with the black shell is the keyboard. In Western Union
equipment it's exactly the opposite.
