My $0.02 worth.

1/4" stereo jacks and plugs. Signal on Tip and Ring and
equipment ground on the sleeve.

Of course someone's going to point out hitting the exposed
tip on the plug against a grounded frame. Yes, true. On a
SOURCE, not on a load like a printer.

Something like this is a pretty cheap way to go as a starting
package.
