For ham radio the unshift on space often comes in handy as you mentioned. 
When the machine goes to FIGS due to a bad signal or misses the LTRS is 
often easier to read the following text.

The Model 15 printer can be made to do either very easy.  Just above the 
keys there is a 'door' and if you open it there is a lever that can be moved 
about 1/4 of an inch to the left or right to change this.  You may have to 
leave the nut holding it on slightly loose.

The other item often missed is to send the FIGS J and S together to get the 
' or BELL.  Seems alot of machines were set up either way depending on the 
exact character set used.
