Huh? assumed you had one. Gil most teletype people do. I am very surprised!
Ham test is easy Gil. could have had a general when I was in 6th grade....
it was just the code that kept me from it.
The tech license is real easy, the general is not much harder... I studied
for the tech using one of the online drill and review sites... aced it...
they handed me the general test and asked if I wanted to try it and I said
ok!
( I had looked at some of those questions too and my odd little brain
storage of details must have been working)
Passed the General just missing a couple questions... and they handed me
the EXTRA test..
I looked at that test and saw instantly enough questions that I did not
know when I quickly flipped though I played it safe and stopped.
Now... the next trick is to get some HF radio referbed and transmitting
here at the museum or.... get something ready to roll. Been too so busy with
all of the history projects I have been procrastinating about actually using
some of the gear. Meanwhile if something ready to roll shows up on the
doorstep we are happy to put it to use!
See ya on the air... Eventually!

OK folks, after some good info from several of you, it does sound like
using 144.390 MHz APRS tracking would be the best bet for this balloon project.
This means I need to study for a ham test now, but they seem to be offered
frequently enough, so I guess I will need to start learnin' some new stuff!
Back to my question about antennas: what to hang under the balloon? It
has been pointed out how it needs to be omni. I suppose the simplest would
be a 1/4 wave hanging down, and suspended by three or four angled ground
wires that connect to a simple three-or-four-radial-dowel frame or something.
The antenna would collapse on the ground (of course we hopefully have GPS
coordinates for the descent, so we can find it).
Any other antenna recommendations? Dipole? Patch? Nothing commercial --
something I can fabricate out of lightweight wire or foil.
thx, gil
