I thought that too.. there seem to be a couple of different types of
material, also - i've bought a few of these:

which are made of heavy cotton cloth and last much longer than nylon 
ribbons, but produce a rougher-looking impression. They come on a plastic
spool which fits all my machines ok but I'm sure you could rewind them 
onto metal spools too.
