Regrettably, there is almost no consumer electronics engineering left in 
the U.S. today, regardless of the availability of used consumer 
electronic equipment.  It is undoubtedly true, however, that widely 
available, cheap computers have stimulated recent generations of 
software engineers in  much the same way that cheap war surplus did for 
electronics engineers many years ago.
