No joke.  I also ran across "nose oil" concerning single-lens reflex film cameras.  When changing lenses, you'd like them to fit smoothly, but regular oils could spell death for the shutter, iris blades, etc.  It was recommended to rub a little oil from your nose and transfer it to the lens or camera body mating surfaces.  Worked great.
